Connections Between Fiction and Real Life

       Over the past few months, I have been reading and watching the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. It is historical fiction so the major events that take place occurred in real life. The series is set in Scotland around the time of the Jacobite uprising. The book and show depict the events of the battle between the Scots and the British in a battle called Culloden. Today, there is a memorial called The Graves of the Clans.The memorial commemorates the men who fought in the the battle. This memorial is shown in the show and discussed in the novel.The main character visits the memorial, and as she walks upon the field of Culloden, she is able to picture the men fighting and the battle taking place. The placement of the memorial allows visitors to walk in the exact location the battle took place and even imagine the events that occurred.
     
      When selecting a location for a memorial, it is very important that the location is significant or represents something related to what the memorial is commemorating. In the memorial for the Battle of Culloden, its placed at the site of the battle. "No other site would give this pertinence" (qtd. in Hussey 394). The location of the memorial is a significant spot which allows visitors to connect and stand where the soldiers stood. If it was placed anywhere else, it would not create the same feeling when visiting. Other Memorials such as the Vietnam War memorial have locations with meaning. The Vietnam War memorial is placed between the Lincoln memorial which represents the past and the Washington Monument which represents the future. The placement of memorials needs to have purpose or it would not have the same effect.

    I totally agree that the location of a memorial is vital to it's influence on society. I love the quote and pictures you used, they really allowed me to understand the connection between the fictional TV show and the actual memorial!

    I love your point on how memorial are a connection when typically they are seen to respect. It's awesome on how you tied what you watch on tv outside of school and connected it to what you are learning during school.

    I love how you connected the topic of memorials to a TV show! The scene you talked about really gives a good idea of why location matters with memorials. It's so true that placement needs a purpose. I love this idea!

 When I first started my BBC book, I had no idea what it was about. I didn't even read the quick summary on it that we were supposed to. The World Around Us

People are molded by the world around them–The people who raise them, their friends, the town they live in. All of these factors influence who they become, how they act, and how they see the world. For example a child raised in poverty is going to see the world differently then one raised in wealth. And someone raised with a loving family will not be the same as someone raised in a broken home.     Binary opposition is defined as a pair of related terms or concepts that are opposite in meaning. In literature, authors use binary opposites to explore the differences between groups, and often the boundaries between them. Binary opposition creates conflict because there are some people who don't fit into either group and fall into what is called the “grey area”. Authors such as J.K. Rowling in the Harry Potter series, and Anthony Doerr In All the Light We Cannot See, use binary opposition to show that dividing individuals into groups and categorizing them within society can cause problems.
