Learning Concentration

As a student, I have never been one to listen intently for the whole class period. My mind is either wandering or I am doodling on something I probably shouldn't be. I spend most of my time trying to listen, but to no avail I end up thinking about other things. I have always thought that it was impossible to make myself pay attention and think about what is being taught at the moment. While reading This Is Water, the author, David Wallace, explained that "its extremely difficult to stay alert and attentive instead of getting hypnotized by the constant monologue inside your own head"(Wallace 234). It is very hard for me to concentrate, but the author did say that you can teach yourself how to think. Although it is very difficult to do because getting lost inside your own head is automatic, it is possible.
Prior to reading this, I did not realize one could train them
self to think about what was necessary, and I feel others may not either. As so many people have issues concentrating in class and do nothing about it. What I wonder the most is that if people knew that they could teach themselves how to think would they? Let me ask you this, if you spent all day lost in your own thoughts and not on the present, would you choose to change that and learn how to concentrate?

  1. I really like how you were able to connect the piece from class to your own life. I find this blog very relatable and that this piece truly makes you think about how we should be thinking during our daily lives.

  2. I really liked how you tied "This is Water" to your own personal experiences. I too wasn't aware that you could teach yourself how to think. I also liked how you implemented questions at the end of your piece, which had me thinking for myself if I would be able to change my mindset and truly concentrate.

  3. I liked how you questioned if people would want to train their mind to focus instead of wander, and I wonder how many people would want to. I also find this very relatable, so I like how you related it to yourself.
