Maybe Lets Not
A stereotype is defined as a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a
particular type of person or thing. Stereotypes are constantly used in society today, but they
shouldn't be. Although they are partially true and were created for a reason, there are many
exceptions to stereotypes, and they definitely shouldn't be used to classify groups of people.
There are women who can drive well, African Americans who aren't loud, Asians who aren't
geniuses at math, gays who have deep voices, and many more. Beneatha in the book, A Raisin
in the Sun, was going to college, "listen,
I'm going to be a doctor"(Hansberry). Not
only was Beneatha getting an education as
a woman, but she was also going to be a
doctor which at the time was a male dominated
profession. Beneatha is one of the many examples
where stereotypes don't apply. She is an African
American getting a college education, and a
woman becoming a doctor instead of "staying at
home, cleaning the house, and raising the kids."
It is very difficult to not fall into the using of
stereotypes. They are everywhere, in movies, tv
shows, social media, books, and everyday life.
However, stereotypes restrict people's view of the
world and cause the prevention of seeing people
for who they really are. Most people don't fit into
the oversimplified classification of a particular
type of person, and for that reason Stereotypes no longer apply and
should not be used in the world today.

I love how you analyzed Beneatha and then applied it to the world around us. I totally agree that stereotypes are often times untrue, which makes me even wonder why they exist?
ReplyDeleteI love how you stated common stereotypes in your writing to emphasize how much we can relate to them, as we have all heard them many times. Also, I liked how you stated that stereotypes are everywhere, such as movies, tv shows, and so on, because it really shows how our community has been shaped around them.
