Required Rituals

Image result for shaving cream in a handA tribe known as the "Nacirema" take part in truly unbelievable rituals that have recently been studied by myself and my colleagues. However, I will only be sharing one of these wonders today. It was early this past year when we first witnessed the remarkable practice taking place. This ritual mainly taken part in by the women of the tribe and ever so rarely by the men is truly a sight to see. It begins when the women of the tribe enter their teens years (for the men, I am not aware of the age). It was made known to me that the ritual is not quit a daily occurence, but changes depending on the person. It starts with the women entering the shrine which is made of solid stone and filled with holy water that rids the tribal women of their impurities. The women first take out the sharp blade and magical potion that will be used during the process. These sacred materials can be found at any of the many Tramlaws or Regorks, as it is necessary for all women to take part in this ritual or they will be outcast (which I was not surprised to learn because many of the numerous rituals practiced by the said tribe have consequences if not performed). The ritual, which can be lengthy requires the women to cover their legs with the magical potion, and then with utmost care, scrape it away with a small sharp blade. They then rinse in the holy water until the unwanted imperfections can no longer be seen or felt on their legs. And it isn't until this is completed that the women can be seen by other tribesmen.

  1. I loved how you talked about a "ritual" that the journal did not point out. The way you mimicked Miner's style to mock the routine of shaving is spot-on.

  2. I love how you wrote in the perspective of an anthropologist, it really gives your style some variation. The shaving example was perfect!

  3. It’s super interesting how you mirrored the style of Nacirema to show another common aspect of our lives (shaving). I also love how you did Walmart and Kroger backwords like Nacirema!
