Weekend Update

My weekend was jam-packed with stuff. Over the span of Friday and Saturday, I had three water polo games which were pretty exhausting. I scored in two of them, and I was kicked out of the third. The referees were being kind of ridiculous and in my opinion, I don't think I should have been rolled. After my two games on Saturday, I drove out to my Aunt and Uncle's house in West Bloomfield to celebrate my cousin's first communion. The food was fantastic and my sister and I sat on the beach for a while which was relaxing. Later that night, I was asked to prom which was exciting! It was a complete surprise and it definitely lived up to my expectations. Prior to him asking me, I had told him if he didn't do a good job I would say no as a joke, but I think he took it seriously because he did a much better job this time compared to when he asked me to homecoming last year. He spelled out Prom in candles on my porch and had a poster with fairy lights! Sunday was another busy day for me. I had to wake up at 7:30 to go to work. I am a lifeguard at a swim club and we were cleaning and setting up the club for opening day which is in a few weeks. Although I wasn't very happy about waking up so early, it was nice to see all my work friends that I haven't seen in a long time. Most of them attend Birmingham schools so I don't see them often. I spent the 6 hours that I was there pulling weeds around the club so when it was time to go home I was pumped. At home, I watched the final episode of Modern family. I cried. I didn't want it to end. I have spent the past few months watching the characters age 11 years and when it finally ended, it was really sad.

I Actually Kind Of Liked It

 When I first started my BBC book, I had no idea what it was about. I didn't even read the quick summary on it that we were supposed to. I picked Middlesex to read only because my friends in the class put it as their first choice. I had no idea what I was getting into when I opened the book and started reading for the first time. I guess I couldn't expect much cause I didn't even have the slightest notion of what it was about. I don't think I've ever read a novel with the level of detail and plot that Middlesex has. I'm still not convinced that the book is not based on a true story, and for that I applaud the author. Having just finished the whole 544 pages, I can confidently say I've never read a book quite like Middlesex . The World Around Us

People are molded by the world around them–The people who raise them, their friends, the town they live in. All of these factors influence who they become, how they act, and how they see the world. For example a child raised in poverty is going to see the world differently then one raised in wealth. And someone raised with a loving family will not be the same as someone raised in a broken home. These are just a few of the many factors that can cause a change from one person to the next. In the book, The Nickel Boys, Elwood, the main character, was said to “talk like a white college boy” unlike the rest of the African Americans at the academy. Elwood was raised to strive for a good education, he went to school, and enjoyed learning. Whereas the other boys weren’t.     Binary opposition is defined as a pair of related terms or concepts that are opposite in meaning. In literature, authors use binary opposites to explore the differences between groups, and often the boundaries between them. Binary opposition creates conflict because there are some people who don't fit into either group and fall into what is called the “grey area”. Authors such as J.K. Rowling in the Harry Potter series, and Anthony Doerr In All the Light We Cannot See, use binary opposition to show that dividing individuals into groups and categorizing them within society can cause problems. The issues that arise are not just seen in literature, but also in society today.       The magic community and non-magic community in Harry Potter would be considered binary opposites.
